What happens if the smart lock battery goes flat?
Asked by Graham, Labrador · 2026-04-22
This is my main worry — am I going to get locked out of my own house if the batteries die?
Most reputable smart locks warn you well in advance with low-battery alerts in the app and beeps at the door, so a sudden death is rare. As a backup, many models include a mechanical key override, and some offer emergency power via a USB-C port or 9V terminal to get you in long enough to swap batteries. When you install a lock, test the backup method straight away so you know it works before you ever need it, and keep the physical key somewhere safe off-site or with someone you trust.

You get low-battery warnings first. Backups include a mechanical key and, on some models, emergency USB/9V power. Test the backup at install time and keep a spare key.
Mine has a USB-C on the bottom. Phone charger got me in when I ignored the warnings too long. Lesson learned!
