Smart lock tips & pointers

Fast, practical pointers you can scan in a minute — from door fit and coastal durability to batteries, security and renting.

Choose a smart lock in 5 steps

  1. 1 Check the door. Measure thickness and backset, and identify the lock type (deadbolt, mortice, multi-point).
  2. 2 Choose connectivity. Pick Bluetooth for at-the-door unlock, or Wi‑Fi/bridge for remote access and alerts.
  3. 3 Pick access methods. Fingerprint for speed, keypad for guests, key for backup — most locks offer several.
  4. 4 Weigh the weather. For outdoor or coastal doors, prioritise IP ratings and sealed hardware.
  5. 5 Confirm ecosystem & backup. Check Apple Home/Google/Alexa support if needed, and plan a mechanical backup.

Before you buy

  • Measure door thickness, backset and cross-bore, then match them to the product’s fitment specs.
  • Photograph your existing lock and door edge — it makes comparing specs far easier.
  • Confirm the lock type: cylindrical deadbolt swaps are DIY-friendly; mortice and multi-point doors need a locksmith.
  • Decide if you need remote access before paying for Wi‑Fi — Bluetooth is cheaper and lasts longer if you only unlock at the door.

Coastal & outdoor

  • For exposed doors and gates, look for an IP weather rating (IP65 or better) and sealed keypads.
  • Rinse salt off outdoor hardware periodically — Gold Coast sea spray is relentless.
  • Use a weatherproof smart padlock for gates and sheds rather than an indoor-rated door lock.
  • Match the rating to how sheltered the specific door is; an eaved front door is an easier job than an open gate.

Access & everyday use

  • Enrol two fingerprints per person so a cut or dirty finger doesn’t lock you out.
  • Keep a keypad code for guests and wet hands even if you mainly use fingerprint.
  • Set temporary, expiring codes for cleaners, tradies and short-stay guests — never one shared permanent code.
  • Turn on auto-lock so the door secures itself if someone forgets.

Power & backup

  • Test the mechanical key and manual operation at install, before you rely on the app.
  • Keep a spare set of quality batteries and glance at the app battery level occasionally.
  • Store a physical key off-site or with someone you trust as a final backup.
  • Note whether your lock has emergency USB/9V power for a fast get-in if batteries die.

Security & privacy

  • Choose locks with recognised security ratings (e.g. ANSI/BHMA) and tamper alerts.
  • Use a strong, unique password for the lock’s app and enable two-factor authentication if offered.
  • Prefer brands that ship regular firmware updates.
  • Require a PIN for any voice-assistant unlocking.

Renting & reversible installs

  • Get landlord permission in writing before changing a lock.
  • Prefer locks that reuse the existing prep without new holes.
  • Keep the original hardware so you can refit it when you move out.
  • Consider a smart padlock if drilling is off the table entirely.
