How long do smart lock batteries usually last?
Asked by Peter, Ashmore · 2026-04-30
Roughly how often will I be changing batteries? Trying to gauge the ongoing hassle.
It depends on the lock and how you use it, but many AA-powered locks last roughly 6–12 months per set, while some rechargeable models go a few months between charges. Wi‑Fi and auto-lock features use more power than Bluetooth-only operation, so a heavily-used Wi‑Fi lock at a busy front door will need attention sooner. You will always get low-battery warnings before it dies. To reduce hassle, keep a spare set of quality batteries on hand and check the level in the app occasionally.

Expect ~6–12 months on AA for many locks, less if you use Wi‑Fi/auto-lock heavily. You get warnings first. Keep spares and glance at the app battery level now and then.
Ours does about 8 months with Wi‑Fi on and a busy household. Not bad.
