Many deadbolt-style smart locks are DIY-friendly if your door already has a standard cylindrical lock. Handle-set and mortise replacements are more involved.

Before you buy

  • Measure door thickness and existing backset.
  • Check handing (left/right) if the product is not reversible.
  • Confirm you have room for the interior assembly — some are bulky.

Install day

  1. Remove the old lock carefully and keep screws organised.
  2. Fit the latch/deadbolt to the correct backset.
  3. Align the exterior and interior assemblies; do not overtighten.
  4. Test mechanical key operation before installing batteries and pairing the app.
  5. Enrol fingerprints and create a guest code only after the bolt throws cleanly.

When to call a locksmith

Call a professional if the door is warped, the strike plate does not line up, you have a multi-point locking system, or you are replacing a mortise lock. A clean install matters more than any app feature.

Backset, thickness and latch type matter more than the app. Call a locksmith for mortise or multi-point doors.
