Fingerprint or keypad — which should I get?
Asked by Leah, Helensvale · 2026-05-14
Trying to decide between a fingerprint lock and a keypad one for a busy family home. Which is more practical day to day?
You do not really have to choose — most fingerprint locks also include a keypad, and that combination is ideal for families. Fingerprint is fastest for household members and great for kids who lose keys. A keypad is handy when hands are wet or full, and lets you hand out a code to a visitor without enrolling their finger. The practical tip: enrol two fingers per person (in case one is cut or dirty), and set a guest code you can rotate. Keep a mechanical key as the final backup.

Most fingerprint locks include a keypad too, so get both. Fingerprint for family speed, keypad for guests/wet hands. Enrol two fingers each and keep a key backup.
Kids love the fingerprint. We use the keypad for grandparents who find the sensor fiddly.
